I participate in artsonia. I love it. I think it is a great communication tool between home and school and it's a great place to advocate for your program. A fringe benefit is that it kicks back some of its profits to your school's art program. In the past I've used the profits to supplement my supply budget or bought a "wish list" item. I'm at a school now that has a very fair budget and I'm fortunate enough to have the means to purchase the things I need to teach. I know that this is not the case everywhere and I'm fortunate to teach in a community that supports the arts.
This year, I wanted to do something different with our artsonia profits, rather than supplement our budget. So this year, instead we we will be purchasing a piece of art to start our very own modern art collection for our elementary school.
I began the school year doing the normal intro/expectation speech/song and dance, but followed it up with a discussion about our artsonia profits and how we were planning on spending the money as a school. I announced that with the money that the school had made through parents purchasing kid's amazing artwork we would purchase another artist's masterpieces.
We had awesome discussions about why someone would buy art.
Students came up with the following:
I presented them with four options that they could choose from. Students had small group discussions (2 min long) after each slide was shown and talked about why or why not that artwork would be the one they would choose to purchase. They also had to discuss how much it would cost in total (taking into account shipping costs, if we needed a frame, etc) and how we would display it. After all choices were presented kids voted by putting an orange sticker underneath the picture of the artwork.
Below are the slides. Kids are super excited and we had AWESOME discussions about art to kick off the year. We will purchase which ever artwork the most kids vote for and proudly display it as our very first artwork for our very own modern art museum. Ill let you know which one they pick after everyone votes next week.
How does everyone else spend any extra money that got kicked back to their art program?
